British Rowing calls coastal sculling "sculling's wilder cousin", and as the North East's first GB Coastal Sculling Academy, there's no better place to experience the thrills and spills of the sport!
Tynemouth is home to a squad of high-performance Beach Sprint athletes who have represented their country in national and international competitions, and we are also building a squad of Masters Beach Sprinters, so if you are an experienced rower and think you could succeed at the newest kid on the Olympic rowing block, get in touch!
Endurance races take place over 4km for heats and 6km courses for finals and either start and/or finish off a beach or out at sea. This is the race for you if you’re wanting to challenge yourself over longer distances.
Beach Sprint races are much faster. Rowers start by running 10-50m from a starting point on the beach before jumping in their boat and slaloming out through buoys for 250m, spinning and rowing the boat straight back to the beach before finally leaving the boat and sprinting to the finish.
